Weddel and Co., Lone jbn, March 3, reported that the steadies; tone which was in evidence a week a go had materialised into a really firm ,hide market. Frigorifico hides in the i Argentine improved by about s~per event, to 10 per cent. Sound Argentine! .'ox hides sold at 71 pesos early in the ■■'peek, with indirect sales valued at T<f to 74 pesos. It was reported that total stocks of ox hides available in sound and defective did not amount to more Ithan 10,000, so that higher prices were c KpectecL' "The nominal asking price tod ay for sound frigoriflcos would be 5 7- !d to 6d, with defectives at 5 3-8 dto 5£H." In miscellaneous and, ;olonial markets more business has bf fen done. Fair quantities of D/s Australi ?n hides have been sold at from 6d to I fed, and local auctions higher by about jd to 3-Bd, although any rapid advance ; in prices will not be followed up by buyers in England. ■ Japan was rep prted to be operating in certain Australian qualities at higher prices. Mew Zealands were slightly dearer arfd sparingly offered. Tanners in the United Kingdom complained about th p demand for leather, which was anything but good.
