MR. EVAN PARRY
ENTERTAINED BY ENGINEERS
The growth of the New Zealand Government's hydrq-electric undertakings from a turnover of £37,000, and a total invested capital of £400,000, in their infancy, to an annual turnover today of £1,450,000, with no less than £14,000,000 invested by the Government in power-generating schemes, was sketched by the Chief Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr. F. T. M. Kissel, at a complimentary luncheon tendered a few days ago to Mr. Evan Parry, M.1.E.E., at Wellington, by the New Zealand Institute of Engineers.
From 1911 to 1919 Mr. Parry was chief electrical engineer to the New Zealand Government, and formulated the general scheme upon which the hydro-electricity system of New Zealand has been built.
Mr. H. Vickerman, who presided over an attendance of some 60 members of the institute, said that New Zealand had been very fortunate in having had. an engineer of Mr. Parry's' calibre to lay down a sound scheme, both technically and economically, for the production of hydro-electricity for a country such as New Zealand.
Mr. Kissel said that the New Zealand scheme was, at its inception, unique, and it' would be no exaggeration to say that older countries had to some degree copied, and at all events considerably used, both the technical and economic aspects of , the system of hydro-electricity supply which New Zealand was enjoying today.
Mr. Parry, in responding to the welcome, remarked that he had by no means lost interest in his New Zealand work or in that which has been carried on by his colleagues and brother engineers in this country. He had followed with great interest the doings of various supply authorities in New. Zealand, and particularly those lof the annual conference. He said he was enjoying his visit to New Zealand very much, • and intimated that he hoped to return again in the near future.
Mr. and Mrs. Parry left for England today by the Rangitata.
