RUBBISH REMOVAL

POSITION AT UPPER HUTT

The position in regard to the removal of rubbish in the Upper Hutt borough was outlined in a report from the public services committee to the meet-, ing of the Upper Hutt Borough Council fast evening. The report stated that Mr. B. Dalley collected rubbish at 35 houses in February of this year. Some places had a fortnightly service at 6d, some monthly service at 3d, butchers paid 3d per month, fishmongers 6d per week, and business services 6d a week.

If all dues had been paid Mr. Dalley's return would be 12s 4d per week. Outstanding amounts due and not^paid amounted to £7. At no time had Mr. Dalley's truck been out of commission except with a broken axle. Mr. Dalley still had the truck and was willing to continue the service if sufficient inducement was offered.

The Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy)" stated that on June 12, 1936, the council sent out 1100 circulars inquiring what support would be accorded a rubbish removal scheme. Replies, on which the council had offered to pay postage, were received from 130 ratepayers and 406 householders. Opinion among the ratepayers was equally divided, but among the householders 292 were against the proposal and 114 for it. The services rendered increased from 11 to 39 and down to 35. ~ ,

"There is obviously no demand for the service," commented Councillor F. Castle. . '

It was decided to go no further iii the matter beyond making.known the fact that Mr. Dalley would collect rubbish if requested to do so.
