START OF INVESTIGATION
GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS
Details of the benefits the Government proposes under its social security scheme were given ■ tfy the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) today before the special Parliamentary Committee appointed by resolution of the House of. Representatives to examine the plan and hear evidence upon it. The statement amplified in some respects the broadcast address given by Mr. SaVage on Saturday evening last, but all reference1 to estimated cost was omitted. » * It is proposed that the scheme should operate from April 1, 1939, and the cost is to be met by a social security contribution of Is in the £ on wages and other income, by a continuance of the present registration fee of £1 a year for males over 20 years, and by a subsidy from the Consolidated Fund.
The Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer (Government, Oamaru) was elected chairman of the Committee, on the motion of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) and' Mr. \J. O'Brien (Government, Westland). The other' member's of the committee are:—Mr. Savage, the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Nash), Mr. H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson), Mr. D. Barnes (Government, Waitaki), Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Opposition, Oroua), Mr. S. G. Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North), Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Opposition, Riccarton), Mr.< O'Brien, Mr. A. S. Richards (Government, Roskill), and Mr. J. Robertson, (Government, Masterton). Mr. Robertson was noj^ present and an apology from him explaining""that he was leaving Sydney was sustained.
