MOTOR CAMPS
A WELLINGTON NEED
RUSSELL TERRACE GROUNDS
A proposal made at the meeting 'of the City Council last night by Councillor W. Duncan that a visit should be paid to-the Russell Terrace area of the Town Belt to consider its development as a motor camp led to a protest by Councillor L. McKenzie against any hasty decision on - the point.
Russell Terrace, said Councillor McKenzie, was not suitable for development as a motor camp, but the" area was very suitable for the formar tion of playing fields. Scorching Bay was the place for a motor camp for Wellington: there was not, in fact, any place about Wellington so well situated for the purpose. It was comparatively close to the Exhibition area, whereas Russell Terrace was' far away. No decision should be .reached until full reports had been obtained.' Provision had id be macle for visiting motorists, said Councillor R. McKeen, and so far Wellington had done nothing. It might be necessary to use both the Russell Terrace, area and Scorching Bay, but he doubted whether very much camping accommodation could be made available at Scorching Bay. There was no other area which would provide the space and the facilities which Russell Terrace would, give. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said he agreed as.to the necessity for camping space. The accommodation of visitors to Wellington during the Exhibition period was a very real problem, as to which the directors were very much alive. ■He suggested that the City Engineer should let the couudil have general details of any areas, including Scorching Bay, which might be used for motor, camping, and all such areas should be visited. Motor camps should be of material value in,providing accommodation during the Exhibition period, said Councillor J. Read, atid apart from that, aspect permanent .camps would bring a great many people to Wellington in later years. ■
