THE REDDING SHIELD
WIN FOR PETONE
Perfect water favoured oarsmen from the three local clubs who took part in the contest for the Redding Shield on Saturday afternoon. Petone won the trophy, with an aggregate of 41. points, Wellington secured 35, and Star 8. In addition to the Redding Shield, Petone also gained the "Top Dog" trophy presented by Mr. C. H. Burridge, president of the Petone Rowing Club.
The course was from Oriental Bay to the end of the Taranaki Street Wharf, and five points were awarded for a win and two for second place in each race. Although the regatta is confined to crews from the Star Boating Club and the Petohe and Wellington Rowing Clubs, T. Hegglun, of Wairau, took part, in the senior single sculls event by invitation, gaining third place.
Results were as follows:—
Maiden Fours.—Wellington No. 1 (E. Woolcott str., K. Fish, N. Matthewson, and W. O'Donnell), 1; Petone (J. Boswell str., J. Tegg, A. Linney, and W. Watson), 2; Wellington No. 2 CJ. Alexander, J. Wilson, J. Koefoed, and A. Clouston), 3.
i . Senior Single Sculls.—Petone No. 1 (P. Abbott), 1; Wellington (J. Luke), '2; Wairau (T. Hegglun), 3. Abbott, the only man to steer a straight course, won by two lengths. Hegglun was i another four lengths back. Maiden Double Sculls.—Petone No. 1 (,T. Killalea str. and M. Clark), 1; Wellington (E. Hollander str. andF. Bock), '2; Petone No. 2 (C. Barraclough str. land E. Paintairt), 3. The Petone pair ■ won. easily, winning by- about ten lengths. ; Junior Fours.—Wellington (R. Tregurtha str, W. McLean, O. Wares, and E. Marchant), lj Petone (K. Williams str., H. Barraclough, F. Cassidy, and T. Cook). 2; Star (T. Alexander str., G. Gibbons. R. Hansen, and G. Broad), 3. Tregurtha's crew rowed a fine race, and finished with something to spare, a length and a quarter ahead of Petone. . Senior Fours.—Petone No. 1 CO. Clayton str., A. Hope, K. Boswell, and R. Sharon), 1; Petone No. 2 (D. Boswell, W. Lind, I. Carter, and G. Leopard), 2. These were the only crews in the event, but they made a race of it, the No. 1 crew winning by half a length. Youths' Fours.—Wellington (A. Manning str. t S. Hinchliff, J. Hetherington, and R. Jamieson), I; Star (J. Gilbertson str., Hamish, Donnelly, and Kingham), 2; Petone (J. Killalea str., Clark, Delaney, and Linney), 3. Won by two lengths, with six lengths between second and third. Maiden Pairs.—Petone (A. Linney str. and H. Parsonage), 1; Wellington (N. Mathewson str. and K. Fish), 2; Star (M. Willis and P. Hughes), 3. Won by three-quarters of a length. Senior Double Sculls.—Petone (P. Abbott str. and C. Gimblett), 1; Wellington (J. Luke str. and H. Spoor), 2. The Petone crew won by two and a half lengths, despite the fact that they went badly off the course. Welterweight Junior Fours.—Wellington (R. Nicholson str., W. Morgan, R. McNair, and S. Watson), 1; Star (P. Columb str., F. Eggers, K. May, and K. Frazer), 2; Petone (R. Lowe str., J. Te Puni, D. Mac Donald, and M. Wells), 33. Wellington and Star fought out the finish. Won by a length. Petone were li lengths further back. Senior Pairs.—Petone (I. Carter str. and G. Leopard), 1; Star (G. Cooke and V. Sheppard), 2. Won by three lengths. Lightweight Maiden Fours.—Petone (G. Calvert str., A. Moore, G. Farney and D. Heney), 1; Wellington (R. MilJburn str., G. Hayter, P. Porter, and W. Sewell), 2; Star (C. Pert str, J. Coates, D Dawson, and J. Cowles), 3. Petone won handsomely by five lengths, half a length separating second and third. Maiden Single Sculls.—Wellington (H. ODonnell), 1; Star IT; Alexander), '2; Petone (R. Sharon), 3. Won easily by about-eight lengths;, three lengths between second and third.
