CHAMPION MATCHES

PLAY AT MIRAMAR

The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association's champion of- champions tournament was concluded at Miramar yesterday afternoon. D. G. France (Thorndon) won the men's title, and Miss J. Douthett (Newtown) the women's title. , „'.. The tournament was started on bavurday afternoon. To qualify as a competitor a player had to hold a club title or a title won outside Wellington. The tourney was of the knock-out variety, each match consisting of three advantage sets. MEN'S SINGLES. , When play was started in the men's singles linal at 3.45 o'clock, the weather, which had been glorious throughout the day, was : oppressively hot. There was riot a breath of wind, and the players suffered visibly norn the heat. P The finalists were France and D. C. Coombe (Waikato). Using his service well,. France won the fiist game, and, placing beautifully, followed up by winning, the next Coombe went to the net with advantage, and from 3-1 against Dim, the score went to 3-2. Coombe, however could do nobetta* arid France took the set 6-2. Coomo^ won the first game in the new set^on France's service, and France evenea the score in the next, 1-1, and went on to make the score 2-1. The fourth game saw some hard' hitting, with Coombe volleying beautifully across the court and he made the score 2-2. Fiance won the next, and Coombe the next. The score see-sawed to 5-5, dux France's consistent play told, and He won the set and match 7-5. : Women's Singles. The temperature was cooler when ealily. Miss Douthett evened . the match at the fourth game, and went on to win the set at. 6-2 In the, second set Miss Fernie failed to hold her opponent, who from 2-1 ran on to 5-1. A combined shipping companies' tournament was held at Miramar on Saturday. The entry was large, and a number of the competitors attained a high standard of play. The matches were all doubles. The semi-finals were reached, but the final is yet to be played. The results of the semi-finals are as follows: —
