LIFE OF SECLUSION
IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
Clad in coarse, brown serge habits and heavily veiled, nine sisters entered the chapel of the Carmelite Monastery, Mount Roskill, yesterday, and knelt at the altar rail. Bishop Liston then handed the key to the Mo.ther Superior, who closed1 the door of the monastery and locked it from.the inside.
This was the impressive part of the ceremony at which1 Bishop Liston enclosed the Carmelite Sisters and blessed the convent building and the chapel. From the moment when the Mother Superior received the key from the Bishop all external contact with the world was cut off, and the" nine Sisters may now receive visitors only at a grille which is curtained. The Sisters have devoted themselves. to a livetime' of seclusion, contemplation, and prayer. . ' " ' ,
The establishment of the Order is an innovation in the North Island, the only other convent of its kind in New Zealand being in Christchurch. -
