PAPER SLIPPER WINS

HAZLETT GOLD CUP

FINAL DAY AT DUNEDIN

(Special to the "Evenlnn Post.")

DUNEDIN, February 12.

Perfect weather again favoured the Dunedin Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, the track being hard and fast. There was a large attendance of enthusiasts, and the totalisator returns for the two days represented an increase of approximately 35 per cent. The Hazlett Gold Cup brought together a small field ,of five runners, and Paper Slipper improved on his first day's performance in the sprmt to win the mile event very nicely from the consistent Top Row. The principal handicap, the Jockey Cluo Handicap went to Galleon, and Janet Gaynor took the sprint honours. MASTER ANOMALY AGAIN. Despite his easy win on the first day, Superex was made a better favourite than Master Anomaly in t'ae Owhiro Hurdles, .but again the latter won easily after being in front after two furlongs. Top Rank went a much better race and ran into second place at the half-mile. As they' turned for home he held prospects, but blundered at the last .fence. Superex moved up rounding the far turn behind Master Anomaly and Top Rank, but he never made much impression after that. Last Link showed up for a mile, but the rest were well beaten. The winner is to be raced over country later on, and he should prove very useful. THE FAVOURITE SCORES. Astaire arid Combat jumped out well from a moving-in start in the Novice. Handicap, and they were always clear. Combat took charge at the'top of the straight and ran home an easy winner. Astaire, who was having his first race for twelve months, tired badly in the last furlong, but Atalanta Lass, on the outside, finished on in good style to take second place. She looks like an early winner. Pink Del was well beaten. Lochie River lost ground, together with one or two others, by the nature of the start. Combat is a four-year-old half-brother to Compensate, winner of the McLean Stakes. He is a bounder on the tracks, but can gallop in a race. . , A COMFORTABLE WIN. A reversal of form was shown by JanetT Gaynor in the Flying Handicap. She was in front after a furlong, and was.never headed, winning very easily, whereas in the Publicans' Handicap, on the first day. she was seventh in a nine-horse field. , Viking was always in the picture but had no chance of getting near the winner in the straight. Pink Robe was a moderate third. Bay Duke was going well and under a good hold at the half-mile, but went back coming up the rise. His form was rather in contrast with that shown on Thursday, but it is understood that he galloped two rounds on Saturday morning. Song Boy might have reached a place if he- had jumped out with the rest. • • . FORM PREVAILS. Ponty was made an unexpected favourite for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, but failed miserably after being well placed along the back. The form horse, Galleon, scored a well-ds-served win. He ran into third place at the three furlongs, and, once straightened up, he put in his. claim to head off Queen Dorothy at the halffurlong. Daring Deed, who went from first to last going to the three furlongs, just beat Good Sun, who, in addition to getting a bad run, did not get much assistance from his rider. , The time for the race was a course record. A PROMISING SORT. Roseman registered his third successive victory in the Abbotsford Handicap, and his win gave his trainer, D. McDonald, four victories at the meeting. Roy Bun looked like heading him at the distance, but Roseman had still a run left in him. and came again in the last 50 yards. He ran to the 'front early and displayed speed as well as stamina. Stratosphere was much closer up all the way than on the first day, and just failed to head off Roy Bun. Night Wings was close up fourth, but the others were well but of it. The winner is now out of hack company. HIS FIRST SUCCESS. Spendthrift and Withdrawal were soon racing well clear of the rest in the Hopeful Handicap, and, once in the straight, the former came away for an easy win. This was his third start and his first win. Netherlea came home well under punishment and headed off Withdrawal in the last 50 yards. Ortyx, an odds-on chance, played up at the start, and, when the barrier went up, cannoned into Poetic. Spendthrift is trained at Invercargill by W. E. Hazlett, and a brilliant five furlongs before" coming to the meeting pointed to her prospects being bright. IN THE VAN THROUGHOUT. Paper Slipper immediately went to the front in the James Hazlett Gold Cup, and was never headed. Top Row, who had followed the winner all the way, threw out a challenge outside of the last half-furlong, but Paper Slipper went away again. He was second to Wild Chase in this race last year, but the latter finished a poor fourth in this sears contest. Davolo was always third, having fWild Chase outside him in the early stages, but Alma was at the rear throughout. The bracket was heavily backed, and, under the circumstances, returned a very good price. L J. Ellis piloted his tljird winner for the day in this race, and his fifth for the meeting. A CONSISTENT RECORD. Paladino started a firm favourite for the Waihola Handicap, and duly won, but he may have been troubled if greater patience had been exercised with Norseman. The latter, after hanging fire at the start, was taken up to the lead going out of the straight. Paladino moved up to second place at the three furlongs, and when straightened up, worked on terms with Norseman, who stumbled. Paladino kept going and won nicely, Norseman coming again to get within half a-length of him. Salient Knight was a poor third with the two other runners beaten on. This was the winner's third win and a second'iti his last four starts.
