CANTERBURY PARK TROTS

(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, February 12. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club held its Summer Meeting today in J ideal conditions. There was a large attendance, though some of the fields were below the usual size. TRIANGLE SURPRISES. The Progessive Handicap was a great race. Gaynor broke after a furlong, Ohinemutu going on in front. Esther took charge at the end of two furlongs, and a little further on Sphinx also headed Ohinemutu, with Triangle and Gay Crusader handy, and Prince Harvester moving up. Gay Crusader dropped out at the home turn. Triangle challenged the leaders when the straight was reached, and won by a length, Prince Harvester beating Ohinemutu by a neck. Esther was a length further back. EASY FOR FAVOURITE. Colonel Grattan, a hot favourite, had ail leasy win in the Telegraph Handicap after going off slowly. Shrewdie led out, Social Pest, Celebrity, and Colonel Grattan following her after two furlongs. Colonel Grattan took charge from Shrewdie and Social Pest three furlOngs from home, where Racketeer was fourth. The result was not again in doubt, so far as first "place was concerned, Colonel Grattan winning by two lengths. Ginger Jack, taking fourth place at the entrance to the straight, got up on the post to beat Shrewdie for second. Social Pest tired to a moderate fourth. PAPARUA TO BIG AUTHOR. Aide de Camp lost a lot of ground soon after the start of the Paparua Handicap, and Big Author went off slowly. Gunfire was soon in charge, but after two furlongs Ilewellyn's Pride and Gallant Knight headed him, Big Author taking fourth place, with the others handy after half a mile. Evicus stumbled and lost her driver less than three furlongs from home. Big Author joined Llewellyn's Pride and Gallant Knight in the lead at the home turn. Big Author led to the straight and won easily. Rongomai finished strongly to cut Llewellyn's Pride out of second place,* and Gallant Knight, who tired, was fourth.

WAITAKI POWER ALL THE WAY. There were 17 starters for the Pioneer Handicap. It was a good race, but Waitaki Power, after being in front from the start, won decisively. Waitaki Power drew away in the straight to continue his consistent form, and Icevus headed -Dark Hazard on the post for second. Snowy d'Oro was fourth, and Reylena finished strongly to head the others. Oversight and Eastern Prince were close up. Fay Rey, who was well backed, broke at the start. GINGER JACK IN TURN. Ginger Jack1 put up a good performance to win the Advance Handicap. Great Cheriault went off badly. Glorietta, after a slow beginning, ran past Ginger Jack to take the lead after two furlongs, with Toorak, Golden Cross, and Navy Blue handy. Glorietta retired half a mile from home.- Ginger Jack then took the lead, and stalled off a late challenge from Toorak by half a length. Cantata moved up over the last half-mile, and- after being handy to the leaders at the entrance to the straight she broke, corning on again to be, only a length away third. FAVOURITE BREAKS. Captain Bolt, the favourite, broke at the start of the Strowan Handicap and never had a chance. Aristotle began slowly, but soon took second place, and he headed Helen's Bay to take the lead after going three furlongs, Garner and Fifa being next. Garner joined Aristotle in the lead at the home turn, with Helen's Bay and Fifa next. Bittersweet and Ganton were not far away, but Bittersweet failed to go on. Garner took the lead a hundred yards from the post, but Ganton came with a rush to beat her by.a length. Fifa was a length away, with Aristotle fourth. Ganton trotted a very solid race all the way. Bittersweet disappointed over the last two furlongs. MOANA TAMA AT LAST. In spite of a brilliant finishing run, Marlene, a hot favourite, just failed to overhaul Moana Tama in the Harewood Handicap. Ivy Peterson and Zincali settled their chances by. breaking at the start. Cruiser led for three furlongs, but broke, Marlene going on from Effle Parrish and Moana Tama. Moana Tama shot away at the entrance to the straight and he stalled off Marlene's challenge by half a length. Cruiser, after two breaks, came home fast in third place, With Effie Parrish fourth. • Moana Tama was a good twenyearold, but after that he disappointed. He joined the stable of G. Mouritz a few months ago, and. in four starts since then he has had a win, a second, and a third. SENSATIONAL FINISH. A sensational performance saw Renown's Best win. the Au Revoir Handicap after losing fully sixty yards when she tangled at the start. Agile led for a furlong and then gave way to Rongomai, with Raydus handy, while Morello and Double Great were not far away. Renown's Best moved up fast after two furlongs, and with a round to go she was in the front bunch. Half a mile from home Rongomai had Raydus and Renown's Best as her nearest attendants, with Agile and Morello next. Once in the" straight, Renown's Best shot to the front. Morello threw out a strong challenge, but though he beat Rongomai by a length Renown's Best won by half a length. Agile finished well in fourth place.

The winner's effort was that of a high-class pacer, who only needs to begin correctly to win in the best company.
