TURN FOR MUDLARKS

/ II EGMGNT CONCLUDES LOWENBERG AND MAESTRO (Special from "Hurry On.") :." ; HAWERA, February 12. Threatening weather in the morning, followed by a ■thunderstorm and steady rain .for. a considerable part of the afternoon, meant a decreased attendance and turnover on the concluding day of the Egmont Racing Clubs Summer Meeting today. . In addition there were several upset results on a track that soon fcecanie soft and cut up a lot.\ The decline'in investments for the meeting amounted to about; 15-per cent, which, under all the/circumstances, was not so-bad as it might -have^been. ■ ■. •■' FIRST START IN ROLE. Having his first start over hurdles, Royal Romance registered an attractive performance when he won the Okaiawa Hurdles in easy fashion. He was well back in the early stages, but moved up fast soon after entering the back to-,join Bing Boy in front, and he had-the favourite beaten before the straight was reached. Life Guard set -the pace for half a mile, but parted ■i.npany with his rider at the1 hurdle in front of the stands. Kentucky Song was a handy third, and Book Law was '-•a good fourth, just in front of the f astRmshing Royal Fire. Royal Romance handled the going better than his opponents; especially BLng Boy. SPRINTERS DEAD-HEAT. Racing out of the back stretch in the Waimate. Handicap Surella opened a big break on his field, and was so far. in front at the home turn that his victory appeared-, assured. But over the last furlong Clessamor came with a late rush, and just got up in time to make it a dead heat. Silvanus was two lengths away third, with Notium and Dancing Lady next. ■'■■■'.'.,'■: BACK AMONG HACKS. Only five paraded for the Meremere Hack Handicap, and the public sorted out Race Call, who duly justified the confidence reposed in him by scoring decisively.': The topweight, who has lately been" racing in oj?en . class, jumped out well, and, after following High Test and Amoroso into .the straight, made his effort on the rails a furlong from the post, and. quickly had the race in hand. His rider kept him going, but he was really never in danger of : defeat. High Test, having his first "face for a considerable time, made a good showing, but had no chance with the winner. Cloak, who was a good second favourite, proved disappointing, never appearing likely in : the straight. Maahanui was in the, rear "throughout. " - ' ■"■■•■;. LOWENBERG IMPROVES. Lowenberg made amends for his Egmont Cup failure by winning the Tonks Stakes 'in solid style. He was always going smoothly in third place about a' length and a half behind the leaders, Red Sand and Francis Drake, after passing the half-mile, but be had to be ridden right out at the end to catch Red Sand, who drew clear at the distance. He handled the heavy going really well, and was in the lead till the distance. Red Sand was responsible for a capital effort and was: unlucky"in meeting one of Lowenberg's calibre. Catalogue appeared to strike some trouble at the far bend. Siegmund. again was never a possibility, even though he came home fairiy well. ; SURPRISE FOR PUBLIC, - Footloose .was-sent put a vhot favourite; for-the Electric Juvenile Handicap but he was decisively beaten ■ by Ramlehi who was having only his second race. Ramleh was slow to find, his-feet- but put in a fast run round the.field at the straight entrance, and, hitting "the \ front a furlong from the post,- went on to win by three lengths.. He is a three-year-old by Rabbi from Rosenur, dam of, Makeup.''Footloose ran W to nis "New Plymouth : form but the task oi civing a smart three-year-old like the winner a year and 161b was too great. MAESTRO LIKES IT EASY. Handling the ground in happy fashion, Maestro just beat Taitoru in the Normanby Handicap. There was little pace on in the early stages and Maestro ran to the front passing the five furlongs. He was first into vthe straight but was challenged by Taitoru. The pair drew out to fight a S reat finish. Taitoru looked likely to get up 50 yards from the post, but Maestro had something in reserve to stall him off by a head. .Three lengths away was Naughty Marietta, followed by Middle and Winsome Lu. A RUNAWAY VICTORY. Daisy Chain won the Trial Hack Handicap in runaway fashion Slam was the first to show out with Golden Orchid Fainer, and Daisy Cham next. 'Daisy Chain then ran up to Slam and this pair showed the way to the straight Daisy Chain then strolled away to beat Slam by three or four lengths, with Trilitha a similar distance away third. Cytos, Fafner, and Golden Orchid were* the next to finish. , A RETURN TO FORM. . Ned Cuttle showed a return to form by'winning the Inaha Hack Handicap 'in decisive fashion after being placed throughout. Earl Colossus, Ohariga, and Conveyer were soon prominent and showed the way into the straight, where Ned Cuttle came with a good run to beat Conveyer by a length and a half. Two lengths away Ilias.just got up to make a dead heat for third with Earl Colossus. Ohanga was fifth and Bonny Glow 'next. . ' . ' ,
