Though he has not yet resumed his official duties, the Prime Minister (the Rt^Hon. M. J. Savage) continues to show continued improvement in health, and is now out- of bed.
The Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb) left for Dunedin this morning.
Mr. H. Tansley Witt, who is associated with Viscount Nuffield's business mi/rests, arrived at Auckland from England on Saturday by the Rangitiki. He is accompanied by Mrs. Witt, and proposes to stay in the Dominion for a fortnight.
Sir Arthur Grant, accompanied by Lady Grant, arrived in Auckland on Saturday by the Rangitiki. Sir Arthur, who is the 11th baronet, entered the Grenadier Guards in 1931 and resigned in 1936. He saw service in -Egypt. He proposes to spend several weeks in the Dominion, and hopes to do some trout fishing. ■
Mr. George Aldridge, secretary of ,the New Zealand Boxing Council, left Wellington for the north this morning.
The N.Z.R.S.A. certificate for outstanding services to the association is to be presented to Mr. M. C. Crighton, Hawera, at a gathering to be held by the South Tarajiaki branch this month. Mr. Crighton has held all the positions of responsibility in the branch, including president, treasurer, secretary, and was a foundation member. The award of this .certificate is a signal honour, as only a few are issued.
Mr. H. A. Sommerville, secretary of the Auckland Hospital Board, will retire oh' February 28, according to the decision .of the board in November to terminate the engagement of employees who had reached the retiring age or period. Mr. Sommerville has filled the office for twenty years. ,
Mr. E. D. McNeill, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McNeill, Collingwood, has accepted a position as travelling representative in London and the South of England for the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Mr. McNeill, who iwas formerly on the staff of the Invercargill Savings Bank, left Invercargill three years ago and has had experience in London and various parts of England with Swift and Company, Chicago meat packers.
The Rev. C. W. Haskell, who has been in charge of the Anglican Mission, in Karachi, India, is at present . home on furlough,' and is staying with, his parents at Edinburgh Street, Spreydon. He will begin three weeks' deputation work in the Christchurch Diocese next week.
Mr. W. H. McLean has been elected president of the Otago Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association. '
