REPORT TO CHINESE CONSUL

The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Hankow this morning:—

After the fall of Pengpu, the enemy repeatedly attempted to cross the Hwai River and push northwards. Apart from Waiyuan, where they crossed the river, all other attempts to cross proved abortive.

During the week the enemy made no progress whatever in their attempt to link up with their troops from the north. Yesterday and the day before our troops killed over 500 of those Japanese troops who crossed the river at Waiyuan. The few who remain are now surrounded.
