MINER OVERWHELMED

GREAT FALL OF STONE

FATALITY ON WEST COAST

(By Telegraph—Pre9a Association.) GREYMOUTH, February 11. A well-known coal miner, Robert Knight, aged 56, of Runanga, a married man, was killed at 11.30 a.m. today by a fall of stone in O'Brien and party's co-operative colliery at Renawanui. He was engaged at a face in a high pillar section when over 500 tons of stone dropped upon him from the roof without warning.

His mate, William Armstrong, had a fortunate escape. He ran from the falling stone.

It required over six hours to extricate Knight's body, which was buried to a depth of 20 feet. Death was apparently due to suffocation.

Mr. Knight was a native of Australia, and was related to Mrs. Semple, wife of the Hon. R. Semple. He was an early president of the State Miners' Union and at the time of his death was president of the Runanga branch of'the Labour Party.
