FROM NELSON COLLEGE

The Midland Club seems to have among its players some of the most prominent cricketers turned out by Nelson College - during the last few years. Two, in particular, R. Buddie and T. Ralfe, were the stalwarts of the college eleven some time ago, and both represented Nelson in either Hawke Cup games or Newman

Shield games. Buddie was regarded at Nelson as the finest wicketkeeper batsman turned out by the college for over ten years, but, of course, with Tindill back in harness again, he has not many opportunities of showing his capabilities behind the stumps. Before Tindill returned from the New Zealand tour of England, Buddie kept stumps, and showed that he was no mean exponent in that position. Ralfe first represented Nelson in Hawke Cup cricket in the 1933-34 season, but in representative games did not get a great deal of bowling, mainly owing to the fact that Nelson had a strong attack with Jack and Alec Newman, D. L. Freeman, and McGirr.

Freeman, who is at present on holiday in Wellington, played for., the New Zealand side when he was attending Nelson College, and while on leave is playing for the Midland second grade team. Playing with him is Fay, who has occasionally played for the seniors, with reasonable success, too. Fay in the 1929-30 season was one of the best bowlers in the Nelson College eleven, and in those days bowled a faster ball than he is sending down now. One notable absentee in recent seasons is Karsten, who represented the Wellington country eleven on one occasion when captain of the Nelson College.team and joined up with the Midland Club on his arrival in Wellington a season or two ago. He failed to strike form, however, and, after a season in second grade appears to have dropped out of the game.

Another ex-Nelson College player who has performed well in recent weeks is A. Dv Feu, who is playing for Institute. He, also, represented the Nelson provincial side.
