THE NOLAN CUP WINNER
SllvuniiK, winner of the Nolan Cup at JC/jinunt on Thursday, has now worked her way out of hack class, but .she should still be able to exploit the ujK-ii milks successfully. Two years u/.;o .she gave ijromi.se, then had only one sVuvt ""last term, but in six outirifts this .season .she: has won four limes. She was tackling a middle distance for the first time on Thursday. Silvunus is a six-year-old well-made liver chestnut daughter of Nigger Minstrel and the Tree Lucerne—Flying Wind mare Airway, a good performer with several wins in her single season's racing. She was bred by the Hawera trainer M. Conway, who raced the dam and later sold her with her daughter to Mr. J. C. Bublitz, of Hawera, one of Silvanus's present owners. As a four-year-old Silvanus was raced under lease by Mr. R. G. Mumby, for whom she won her single race prior to the present season. Earlier in her career she was difficult to train owing to soreness, and the same trouble probably accounted for her being able to make only one appearance last year. Mr. Bublitz then sold a half-interest in her to Mr. J. Ruttiman, and she was handed to the Waverley trainer G. A. Reid, to whom the credit must be given for fitting her so well lor her recent racing.
