TOURNAMENT BEGUN
GOOD SCORES RECORDED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, February 11. The annual tournament of the Professional Golfers' Association was begun on the Invercargill Golf Club's links at Otatara today in ideal
weather. Because of a lengthy spell of dry weather the course, which mea- ( sures 6000 yards, was very fast, long drives getting from 280 to 320 and 330 yards from the tee when playing with the light south-easterly breeze. Several drove past the tenth green (23G • yards) and at the second (339 yards), A. Guy was slightly past with his drive. In the morning, which was hot and calm, a stableford handicap was played, and this afternoon, which was a trifle cooler, a bogey handicap. The net scores in the two rounds counted for . the Bromford Cup. Tomorrow the first and second round?, of the Southland provincial professional championship will be played, and the following day the third and fourth rounds. The scores this morning were very good, including three 70's and three 71's, but in the afternoon the majority of the competitors dropped up to five : and six strokes. The most impressive golf was played by B. J. Smith, jun. (Invercargill), who had two rounds of 71- A Murray (Auckland), who had 71 and 72; A. Guy (Dannevirke), who was round in 70 and 73; and E. S. Douglas (Dunedin), whose scores were 74 and 70. Douglas began by duffing ' his first drive, but played brilliantly for the last 16 holes. The best cards were:— Stableford Handicap. H R. Blair (Christchurch), 41; T. S. Galloway (Auckland), 41; J. Lambie (Hastings), 41; A. Guy, 40; C. C Clements (Christchurch), 40; B. J. Smith, jun. 39; A. Murray, 39; J. Forrest (Ch'ristchurch), 38; W. Allbon, 38. - The tie was decided on the afternoon round, Lambie being the winner. Bogey Handicap. E. S. Douglas, 4 up; B. J. Smith, jun., 3 up; A. Murray, 1 up; A.
