WOMEN'S CRICKET

N.Z. TEAM'S MATCH PLAY AT THE BASIN An opportunity of seeing the New Zealand women's cricket representatives in action on their return from Australia was afforded at the Basin Reserve today. The tourists met a Wellington side, as they had done before leaving for Sydney, the match being played on a wicket, in the southeastern section of the Reserve so as not to interfere with the men's senior matches on the same ground. In the women's match there was a pre-lunch session, and in this the Wellington side, batting first, did well in making 79 runs for the loss of three wickets. The wicket was on the soft side, as was the outfield, and the fact that only two was allowed for each hit" to the boundary helped to keep the scoring rate down. Many of the strokes to the boundary were certainly worth more than two runs, as it was shown in play that more runs could be scored from hits which did not force the ball right to the boundary. . The teams were:— New Zealand.—l. Pickering (captain) ,J. Holmes, M. Thomas,' D. Hatcher, P. Blackler, I. Johns, M. Corby, P. Taylor, M. Hollis, B. Ingram, and J. Fowler, with R. Martin as twelfth and Mrs. D. Simons as manager. Wellington.—H. Buck (captain), H. Ashenden, L. Harris, E. Page, J. Stenberg, N. Sheridan, M. Simpson, A. Ell, P. Sampson, W. Tasker, and H. McLellan. The local side was given a good start by Misses Buck and Harris, both batting well. After the fall of the first wicket Miss Ashenden kept an end up for a while, and then Miss Page took a hand, this left-hander being still unbeaten when the luncheon adjournment was taken. Miss Stenberg, too, had caused the" attack some worry. Most successful of the bowlers in the pre-lunch play was Miss Pickering, who took'two wickets cheaply, Miss Holmes getting the other one. Shortly before the adjournment Miss Hatcher was replaced in the field by the emergency. During the tour Miss Hatcher had met with a leg injury, and the effects of this were being felt by her in the field today. The New Zealand team's fielding was good. Details:— WELLINGTON.'
