POLLOCK STARS.

Sl* "CONrINTRiTf'

The Stars are still in the harids of the Ngaroma Club, Mesdames Sargisson and Galvin, having last week defeated the Central Club, represented by Mesdames Warner and-Ridley. In this match Mrs. Galvin played particularly well, making a break of eight soon after the game commenced, and although her opponents had chances to score, they did not make as much use of the opportunities afforded as the home pair, the game eventually end'ing 26-7. ASSOCIATION FERNS. The. Ferns have no.w changed hands, the Karori Club, represented by Mesdames Steele and Harper, having ■ defeated the holders, Waimarie Club, represented by Mesdames Cooper and Parker. The Karori; pair, established a'lead' soon after the game cbmmenced'and with steady-play, kept'control', most of the time, giving ;he opponents few chances to score. Mesdames Steele and Harper are a strong combinatnn and will be hßrd to defeat on their own lawns. . . ' The next, on .the list of challengers is theWoburn Club arid'the match will be played next Friday at 10 a.m. McKENZIE CUPS. The Cups are still retained by tne Lyall Bay Club, the holders, Mesdames Cbngrieve and Martin, having played' very well against the challengers from trie Wellington Club, Mesdames King and Powell. The latter pair found the greens very fast and were consequently unable to make as much ..progress as they would otherwise have done. The game ended 26-14 in favour- of the Lyall Bay Club.. , WELLINGTON TOURNAMENT, The' Wellington tournament is now in full swing and the manager reports that the matches are being got off with dispatch. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. The New Zealand, championships have now concluded after. ten days' play at Wanganui. The lawns have been' particularly keen and not as good as usual, hence triple and double peeling has not been seen on the lawns as-much as formerly, .'■ Among the outstanding players were J. Tannock (Dunedin), C. La Roche (Wanganui), Mrs. Anstis (Palmerston North), Mrs. C. Wa'tkins (Hastings); and C. Bryan, Wellington. ' ■ The finals of the women's championship went to three games, Mrs. Simpson (Palmerston North) defeating Mrs. Anstis in the first game, the latter player winning the last two games of the rubber. Mrs. Anstis played well in both these games, making the most o.f every opportunity, and collecting the balls for a break whenever possible. The final of the open-championship was played between two minus players, Mrs. Watkins (Hastings) and F. C. Bryan (Wellington), Mrs". Watkins winning 26-17, 18-26, 26-16. In the first game of the rubber'both executed good br-eaks with the first ball,l but neither could get going with the other ball; consequently in and out play constituted the remainder of the game, Mrs. Watkins eventually finishing 26-17. In the second' game Bryan was the first to get, a start, but failed at 'the first hoop! Mrs. Watkins then hit in and completed a break 'to penultimate. Bryan got control, - and also made a substantial break, arid as the shooting by both was exceptionally good in and out play followed for some time, Bryan later making a good finish and winning by 7» points. -•• 1 . In the third game Mrs. Watkins hit hi with the fourth ball, and in the aext turn made six points, gradually Teaching penultimate. Bryan at "this stage hit in,' but in separating went boundary. Mrs. Watkins did not score at this stage, and Bryan secured a long shot. In several turns he carried his clip to penultimate, but in attempting a good finish, stop-shotted his opponents' ball bouhdary. Mrs. Watkins then carried her clip to-the peg, after which Bryan finishing with • the forward ball, pegged out his opponent. At this stage Bryan had his backward clip on the third hoop, but with the balls set for a rush, Mrs. Watkins hit the long shot and made'penultimate, but missed 'the long shot. Bryan made the third hoop' arid «gain set a rush for the next hoop in order, when Mrs. Watkins, getting the. shot from one ""end of the"green to the.pth'er, made the rover hoop and finished a thrilling game, thus winning^ the New Zealand open championship! This is the second occasion on which the open championship has been annexed by a lady.' competitor, Mrs; Jarvie having won the event in 1932.' In the men's championship, owing to the fact that C. la Roche had won both lives, the play off for runner-up was between J. Tannock (Dunedin) and A. J. Gibbs (Patea). Soon after the game started Gibbs scored two points. Then Tannock hit in and made a perfect, all-round break, followed'by''a second break- to. the peg,- but in the next, turn in pegging out, he missed with the forward i ball, and elected '.to put the other one out of play. Gibbs here hit in, and made another ten points before Tannock hit in and finished, 26-12. . The following is the complete list of winners:— Open Championship.—Mrs. Watkins (Hastings), F. C. Bryan (Wellington). Men's Championship.—C. la Roche (Wanganui), J. Tannock (Dunedin). Women's Championship.—Mrs. E, G. Anstis (Palmerston North), Mrs. Simpson (Palmerston North). Caldow, official referee, took the.opportunity of going.through

the rules pertaining to the giving and receiving of bisques. She dealt also ; with the wrong-ball law. As there has been a good deal of controversy in regard to the question of using a wrong ball and in the same stroke going boundary, Mrs. Caldow pointed out to the referees and umpires that if after-using a wrong ball a player goes boundary; the opponent still may exercise the option.of having the b.alls interchanged, and the turn (if it has'not already .ceased) continued, or of* having, the '-balls interchanged and the', turn, whether it has already ceased or not, replaced.? . Ano.ther point which; came up for discussion was the question of whether a striker may pass on the responsibility to an umpire of saying whether or not.a ball off which croquet is being taken has* moved or shaken. Hrs. Caldow held that the striker, and striker only, must be responsible in this case. The rule distinctly states that the striker must be able to state that she saw the ball move or shake, and if unable to do so'it is deemed not to have so moved.or shaken. This is the only position when an umpire cannot umpire a shot on the lawns, . Several of the various difficulties which may occur during a game were dealt with on the lawn, and many positions satisfactorily explained. , • Mrs. Gardiner, in the absence of Mrs. Austin, president of '. the as§ocia-. tion, addressed the referees,-and also thanked Mrs. Todd, president of the Kelburn Municipal Club, for her 'hos^ pitality in providing refreshments for alt those present. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs. Gardiner asked the referees if they would kindly let Mrs. Caldow know when they would be free' during the Wellington tournament to take charge of the various matches. SOUTHERN HAWKE'S BAY TOURNAMENT. ".
