Taylor), 8-8 Waikari Jack 36 (J. Siebel), 11-9 Playful 48 (J. S. Hunter). Jackaranda justified his favouritism for the Gracefield Trial Handicap. Moving up from his handicap mark in the first lap, he assumed.charge from Myrtle Oro passing the stands, and over the final lap he always, appeared to have his opponents' measure, though he never attempted ,to slip him. Myrtle Oro, third into the straight, .might have pushed him out, but she was unable to get through by the inner route for which she waited,: and, going into a tangle when 1 she had to be checked, she lost second place to Evora,1 who was second in the running for'the last five furlongs. Wharrun and Storm Signal, handy for the last round, could not improve their positions. Waikari Jack was sixth, with Pagan and Joe Perkins next. Anna Wong and Pirate King failed to begin. Policy went through to the front after a couple of furlongs, displacing Laurene Wood, and at the beginning of the last round was leading Passport, Laurene Wood, Chili Bean, Intrigue, and Oversight. In the straight Chili Bean raced up to Oversight, but over the last half-furlohg Policy answered to a further call and came away again to score by half a length. Four lengths ;back Zincali, who had gone away in a tangle, but improved very fast along the back the last time,.finished well for third just ahead of Intrigue. After a gap were Oversight and Diversion. Just after the start Logan Palm dropped his driver, who managed to hold on to the horse. Times: 3min 19sec, 3min 20 l-ssec, 3m_in 20sec. trained by M. Holmes, Christchurch.) NEW ZEALAND TROTTING GOLD CUP, £700 (including £50 gold cup); second horse £125 and third £75; 2 miles. 4 4- J. Westerman's b g Graham Direct, by Rey de Oro—Becky Logan, 6yrs, 12 (F. G. Holmes) 1 I—l—W. Johnstone's b g King's Play, by Peter Bingen—Buz Buz, aged, scr (M. Stewart) . 2 2—2—W. Hosking"s blk g King's Warrior, by Blue Mountain King—Forward Lady, 24 (F. J. Smith) / 3 Also started: 5-5 Bingen Palm scr (J. R. Simpson), 2-2 Bonny Azure 12 (L. O. Thomas), coupled with King's Warrior,. 3-3 Willow Wave 60 (O. E. Hooper). King's Play, who was twice as Well backed for the Gold Cup as anything else, essayed an end to end win, but after a gallant fight over the last furlong and a half when challenged by Graham Direct, he had to yield the fruits of victory by a neck. The pace was on hot all the way, and so it would have required a superlative effort on the part of the favourite to have held on till the end. Graham Direct -was fourth most of the way, and he began a run which was to secure him the verdict about two furJongs from home. King's Warrior,

who was running on the leader's quarters at the beginning of the last round, tired into third. Willow Wave made up his handicap in good style, but then he had nothing in reserve for the finish. The time, 4min 20 4-ssec, was a track record. - Times, 4min 20 4-ssec, 4min 22sec, 4min 21sec. (Winner trained by F. G. Holmes, Christchurch.)
