TREASURE AT CALAIS
(An interesting find, linked with the long history of England and France, has been made in the course of the demolition of an ancient building in the old quarter of Calais. Stonemasons, busy, working on the foundations of a wall dating from the. fourteenth century, came upon a perfectly preserved casket. They found that it contained a number of gold doubloons struck in 1339, stated to be worth about £10,000. The find has been reported to the Administration dcs Domaines, the equivalent of the British Crown Lands, which in accordance with the French law claims one-third of the value. ' The, casket with its contents is believed to have been buried by one of the six burghers of Calais who in 1347, when the town surrendered to Edward 111, after the battle of Crecy, offered their lives as a ransom for their fellowtownsmen.^
