LONDON, January 24.
The Chinese operating on the Japanese flanks 'in Shantung Province are reported.to have delivered a raid between -Tsiriing and Yingchow, recapturing :Sunchihtien in order to impede the.Japanese advance on the Lunghai railway.-
Close -fighting is progressing near Nanyang Lake. The Japanese are finding difficulty' in closing the 150-mile gap*' between .their troops along the railway owing to the harassing tactics of Chinese guerrilla troops.
.Relays of Japanese warplanes participated; in;. the longest series of air raids yet experienced in South China. The towns bombed included Canton, where: 20 • persons were killed. The Chinese "archies" returned heavy fire.
The Hong Kong correspondent of the "Daily; Mail" states that the British and German 'Consuls-General at Tsingtao made representations to Japan regarding -illegal■■• entry to property of their nationals.^ ';■*■■

The Japanese admit that they have evacuated Hohsien. They deny that this-represents a withdrawal, and say that-when mopping-up operations are completed the Chinese will again be ousted;if they,reoccupy the town.
. The i Japanese spokesman alleged that i Chinese dumps were found in compounds adjoining foreign embassies when: ■■ Nanking was occupied, and added that many Chinese troops have taken?refuge at the Embassies.
