EARTHQUAKE AT HAWAII
THREE SHARP SHOCKS
PANIC IN THEATRE
NO GREAT DAMAGE REPORTED
, HONOLULU, January 28. A strong earthquake of two minutes' dilation was felt extensively at Waildjd. No serious damage is reported so far. Crowds stampeded from the Waikiki Theatre, which rocked violently, as did stores and buildings in the town. The, earthquake gradually increased in intensity. Telephone communication was partially disrupted. It is stated that three sharp shocks accompanied a blinding flash in" the sky, visible for 20 miles. Kauai reporfed two shocks simultaneously. An earthquake was reported at Kilo.; The official In charge of the seismograph at the University of Hawaii reported that a]l the instruments were shattered. It is reported from Maui that stores were damaged. The earthquake was not recorded, on the instruments ,at the Dominion Observatory, the reason being that it was prpbably volcanic in nature^ and not tectonic, the fprmer being only local in their effept.
