FITCH ATTEMPTS A RECORD
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) MASTERTON, This Day. Considerable; interest attached to the appearance of members of the Trinidad Empire. Games team at the Masterton amateur athletic sports meeting today. Noel Stanford, off the ten yards mark, won the 440 yards in 50 l<ssec, after a great tussle with the local runner J. Eastwood (syds), the:two competitors ■ breasting the tape almost together. The ~ sprint crack, J. R. N. Cumberbatch, who started from scratch, dead-heated with Hedge (BJyds) for second place in the 100 yards handicap, which was won by the Pahiatua competitor R. Murch off Byds. ■' Cumberbatch, who was feeling' the, effects of travelling, • also . started: in the 220 yards, but was un- : placed. ' ~, John R. Ashmead, who was- ill on the journey, over the Rimutakas, did not compete, but he gave ah exhibition o£ high and, long jumps.
