HUA WINS THE SPRINT

It is not often that the favourite in the Melbourne Cup defeats a first-class six-furlong field at his next start. In doing this in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley Hua proved his class once again. Jupiter recorded his third successive win over the jumps, when he annexed the Tweedside Hurdles. Results: — WILLIAM REID STAKES, £1000; 6 furlongs. E. E. D. Clark's b c Hua, by Heroic —Gladioli, 3yrs (Wilson) 1 Beechwood, 8.7 (Badger) 2 Regular Bachelor, 8.11 (Breasley) .. 3 Eleven started, including Amiable. A length and three-quarters; head. Time, lmin 11-isec, a course record. CALDERMEADE HANDICAP, £400: li miles. W. R. Pi'ince Quex was second in the Warrock Highweight Handicap, .won by Lady Mauve. Silver Bond was unplaced in the Cranmallan Trial Handicap. The Veilmond colt, Veiled Prophet, won the second division of the Niddrie Handicap in the course record time of 60Jsec for five furlongs.
