ANNIVERSARY DAY'S TURNOVER
FAVOURITES FAIL ONCE AGAIN AT TRENTHAM
(By "Rangatira.") Though the coincidence of Anniversary Day and Saturday this year had the almost inevitable result of causing a drop in the iotalisator investments for the Wellington Racing Clubs-Summer Meeting, which was concluded on Saturday, the turnover for the final day and for the meeting was above the estimate of the club's officials. Saturday's figures, £83,004, have been exceeded only twice on an Anniversary Day, in 1920 and 1921, when £85,445 and £102,783 respectively were handled; and they were much better than the £78,943 of 1927, the last occasion on which the holiday and Saturday coincided. The decrease for the meeting was just under 8 per cent, due, of course, to a Thursday having to replace the Saturday that is usually additional to Anniversary Day. The favourites again had a very poor-innings on Saturday, so that the turnover paid higher testimony to the keenness of investors than might be indicated by the figures. The only favourite _to succeed was die two-year-old Ivar, and during the whole meeting there were only three favourite successes. Form has rarely been more tricky at Trentham, notorious for its trickiness.
