• SHANGHAI; January 21. The Japanese, censor has/again held up a message by Mr. H. J. Timperley to the "Manchester Guardian."

The Shanghai correspondent of the British United Press states that Mr. Timperley's message quoted a story in the "North China Daily News" con-1 firming his own information of Japanese: atrocities in the Nanking area. The! Japanese censor said that unsubstantiated- reports were maliciously intended j to besmirch the good name of the Japanese army.

A Shanghai message on January 17 stated that Mr, H. J. Timperley, the Australian-born correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian," submitted a news telegram and the censor telephoned to him advising that the dispatch had not been sent and requesting his attendance. Mr. Timperley refused, and referred the matter to the British Embassy, which protested to the Consul-General (Mr, Okamoto).
