STABLES AT ADDINGTON

SMILE AGAIN'S PROMISE

(Special from "Irvington.")

CHRISTCHURCH, January 21

The Wellington trainer L. O. Thomas has purchased the property formerly held- by B. Jardcn at Addington, and it is expected that before long he will be established at headquarters. Thomas, a popular member of the profession, has a fairly large team under his care, and he' will make a welcome addition to the Christchurch ranks. - -- ,:

Moana Tama was responsible for another solid showing at Timaru last week, and his last three races have borne out the impression that he will return to the winning list at an early date. He has settled down to his work nicely at Addington under G. Mouritz, and his track efforts have been most pleasing. ' - A .recent winner in Southland was Smile Again, a sister to Grand Mogul. She has been in work at Washdyke for a considerable time under P. Gallagher, and from the onset of her training she displayed promise. ■ Now that

she has started to race she should not bo Jong in living up to expectation. Various ailments have kept Recess ofl: the scene .for some time, but she made her reappearance at Timarulasl week, and her third among the sprinters spoke well for her - future prospects. She should require little racing to bring her back to her best, and it will not be long before she returns to the winning list. Purina,.'a mare who showed consider-1 able promise when first put into training at Addington, changed; ownership and ■ trainers. Her track j work indicated that she has the speed and stamina to win races, but to date she has failed to show any beginning ability, and she will need a deal of experience to overcome her faults and place her among the winners.

DOUBLE-GAITED.

Raced as both a trotter and a pacer at the recent Timaru meeting, Llewellyn's Pet did not display a great deal of dash in either department, and she will need to make a deal of headway before she is impressive. While she has a nice style of trotting, her ap-1 parent lack of stamina is her greatest handicap. • The last but erratic Axiom has disappointed too often to. be considered a good proposition, but his owner has hopes that he will yet prove solid, and he has been given a change of stables, having been taken over by G. McKendry to be trained at, Addington. MeKendry recently went out of the training side of trotting, but he is again getting a number of horses about him, and it is possible that it will not be long before he has his empty stables fullv replenished. The two-year-old filly by Gratcan Loyal from .Bonny Logan, the, dam;of Gaillard, is making excellent'progress in her work at Addinglon under F; G. Holmes, and she has attracted attention by the manner in which she handles herself. Although not big, she is a stylish pacer, with or without hopples, and she gives every promise of proving above the average of her age

TIRED OF RACING.

Both E. 'J. Smith and R. B. Berry had Garner under their care for short periods without getting that trotter to show a'xeturn to form, and she has been returned to her owner, E. C. McDermott, who is again w6rking her at Addington* It is a considerable time sii\ce she raced up to her best track work, and she appears io have tired of 'racing. As it is hoped that she is now in foal, it is unlikely that she will be persevered with a great deal longer. There are not a great .number of novice trotters in work at Addington, and very few of them have shown anything to suggest that there is a champion among them. However, there is one in Sagamore, who promises to prove at-least useful. His racing to date has not been suggestive of solidness, but his track work has revealed that he is capable of showing 'a fine turn of speed, and ■ more experience should find him proving profitable.
