SURF LIFE-SAVING
NATIONAL CONTESTS
EVENTS AT CHRISTCHURCH

• CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The pick of New Zealand's surf teams gathered at New Brighton today for the opening events of the national surf life-saving championships. Interest was added to the championships by the fact that the 29 nominees for inclusion in the Empire Games team were among the competitors. The championships will conclude tomorrow, and on Monday there will be the: final test to choose, the team. The events were held in ideal weather, with a fair surf running. They began on a falling tide. The day was warm and overcast, the absence of sun making visibility good. Entries were about on a par with last year.
The results were as follows:— FOUR MEN ALARM.
First Heat—Maranui B (D. Evans, J. Clark, K. F. Hoy, H. Ha waken), 1; Lyall.Bay A r 2; St. Clairß and Sumner B, equal, 3. Maranui B were the first to touch, just ahead of Lyall Bay. Times: 3min 23 4-ssec, 3min 24sec.
Second Heat.—New Brighton B (Rl Cooper, C. McKenzie, M. ButtericK, G. Horwell), '1; St. Clair A, 2. Lyall Bay were, disqualified, their beltmari being the first to touch 'the buoy. ' Worser Bay did not start. Times: 3rriin 48sec, 3min 55 2-ssec.
Third- Heat—Maranui A ,(E. A. Raven, F. Pennington, >E; ■B. Hughes, and T. Hewett), 1; Taylor's Mistake, 2; Oreti, 3. Maranui have won the'trophy four times. Although' Taylor's Mistake were first, to touch, followed by Oreti, Maranui won on resuscitation and drill points. Times: 3min "38sec, 3 min 24sec. '
'Fourth Heat—North Beach"(G."Griffith, J. McDonald, R. Gibbons, Snd. A. Dalton), 1; New-Brighton A, 2. Sumner A was scratched. North, Beach established a comfortable, lead and were never " seriously challenged. Times:, 3min; 27 2-ssec, 3min" 50 S-Ssec.
