WOMEN'S CRICKET
NEW ZEALAND TEAM
Before leaving by the Wanganella last night for Australia, where they are to play a series of matches in New South Wales, the members of the New Zealand women's cricket team were extended a civic farewell by the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hisolp) and were the guests at luncheon of Mrs. Knox Gilmer, president of the New Zealand's Women's Cricket Council.
In wishing the team well, Mr. Hislop asked them not to forget to mention in Australia that in 1940 New Zealand would be celebrating its Centennial and that a big-scale exhibition was to be held in Wellington. Etc suggested that 1939-40 would be a suitable time to arrange a visit to New Zealand by Australian women players. Mr. J. H. Phillipps, chairman of the management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association, said that the team had a reputation to maintain and that was New Zealand's name for bright cricket.
Expressing thanks for the good wishes, Mrs. D. E. Simons, manager of the team, stated that negotiations had already been entered into for a visit by an Australian women's team.
The captain, Miss I. Pickering, said that although the opposition in Australia would be solid it would be good experience,, and the team would do its best.
