For many years wealthy people in ! Shanghai have been in. the habit of hiring an orchestra to enliven any j event of importance in their family. Followers of this strange custom are now to be found among the people of lesser condition, who have their own particular music on such occasions as marriages, or even funerals, but the costly orchestra is here replaced by a gramophone. The Lord Mayor of Shanghai has decided to abolish this custom, because it makes the inhabitants look ridiculous to foreigners. To that end he will henceforward prosecute the so-called "concert-makers" who, on the occasion of a funeral, do not mind using a radio receiver which simply broadcasts the local programme, often composed of light music\
