GREAT DIVIDE A STAYER

In the little racing he has done in Canterbury Great , Divide has hot put up a bad showing, and the fact that he has taken a record of 3min 17sec so early says a good deal for him (says the "Southlnd Times"). The Great Bingen four-year-old promises to develop into a stayer of some class, and this is not surprising, as he boasts a pedigree rich, in,staying blood. His sire. Great Bingen, was one of the best stayers bred and raced in the Dominion, .and Blue Mountain King (by Ribbonwood, a son of Wildwood) was an Australian-bred sire who proved himself a rare two-miler. Great Divide's maternal line cannot be traced further, but the fact that his grandam, an unregistered mare, left a fine winner in Gold Tinge, is a recommendation in itself.

A combination of Great Bingen and Blue Mountain King blood—representing the respective Bingen. and Wildwood families—is almost certain to have left something possessed of stamina. Both Great Bingen and Blue Mountain King—both colonial-bred ihorses—stood for a time in Southland, but, strangely enough, as in other parts of New Zealand, their value as progenitors was not very highly estimated, by breeders. No sire in New Zealand has had such a fine average of winners as Blue Mountain King (now dead) and Great Bingen's stake earnings have yet to be approached by present-day champions.
