MYSTERY SOLVED
"SHORT-CIRCUITING NATURE"
(Received January 10, 12.30 p,m.)
CALCUTTA, January 9. Professor E. C. Baly, of Liverpool University, told the Science Congress that after years of research he had solved the mystery of carbohydrates, which has been established on the basis of all life. Carbohydrates, including certain sugars, are produced from carbon dioxide and water by a process known as photo-synthesis. He has proved that the first stage is promoted by blue, and the second by red light. He made it possible to "short-circuit" Nature and produce the essentials of plant life in the laboratory. The discovery is said to mean that if Britain is blockaded the nation will not starve.
