GILES OUTSTANDING

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHRISTCHURCH, January 9.

The New Zealand amateur cycling championships concluded at the English Park Stadium on Saturday evening. The outstanding rider was G. R. Giles, Canterbury, whose brilliant recovery of form placed him among the certainties for the Empire Games team. Giles won all three senior titles without being seriously extended, and was very nearly back to toe form that placed him among the first eight in the time trials at the Olympic Games last R. T. Taylor, Auckland, holder of the sprint titles, was injured in training, and did not start. R. Ulmer, Wellington, and C. R. Gooder, Auckland, were the best of the others, but were unable to match Giles when the pace was on. Competition was keen for junior honours. T. Lindley (Canterbury) beat R. E. Clark (Auckland) by inches in a flying finish to the five miles. H. R. Baldwin (Auckland) was clearly superior in the half-mile. Wellington won the teams championship from Auckland as the result of a fine ride by Ulmer. Details:— 1000 Metres Sprint.—Semi-fi/nals— First heat: A. Pennington (Wellington) beat L. Sowerby (Auckland). Time for the last furlong, 13 3-ssec. Second heat: G. R. Giles (Canterbury) beat C. R. Gooder (Auckland). Time, 13 2-ssec. Final:' Giles won the first two out of three matches with Pennington, obviating the necessity of running a third. The winner's times were 13 2-ssec and 13 l-ssec. Giles, in an earlier heat, recorded 13sec. In the race lor third place Gooder easily beat Sowerby, Time, 13 2-ssec. Ten Miles, Paced.—G. R. Giles (Canterbury), 1; R. Ulmer (Wellington), 2; M. P. Byrnes (Auckland). 3, Time, 21vnin 58sec. Won easily by three lengths, half a length between second and third. Half-mile Junior.—H, R. Baldwin (Auckland), 1: J, G. Crofts (Canterbury), 2; D. E. Wilson (Canterbury). 3. Time, lmin 10 3-ssec. Won comfortably by three-quarters of a length. with half a length between second and third. Five Miles, Junior.—T. Lindley (Canterbury). ': R. E. Clark (Auckland). 2; H. R. Baldwin (Auckland). 3. Time. lOmin 57scc. Won by Inches in a Hying finish. The decision was at first wrongly given to Clark, but later corrected In the team championship final Wellington bent; Auckland by 1 3-ssec, It was officially announced after the meeting that Giles had been included in the provisonal selection for the Empire Games team.
