LOCAL TRIALS

TEAM FOR NELSON

A large number of candidates for inclusion in the . Wellington team of junior and intermediate swimming representatives assembled at Thorndon Baths on Saturday afternoon, when trials were held to decide -the personnel of the team. The New Zealand championship meeting for junior and intermediate swimmers is to commence at Nelson on January 15.

The following team was selected: — D. Mason, junior boys' 100 and 220 yards; O. Vaughan, intermediate boys' 100, 220, and 440 yards; I. Robertson, intermediate boys' 100 yards breaststroke; B. Gerrard, intermediate boys' 100 yards backstroke; Miss E. Nisbet, intermediate girls' 100 arid 220 yards and 100 yards backstroke; Miss M. McKechnie, intermediate girls' 100 yards backstroke. , .. «

The results of the trials are as fol lows:—

100 yds Intermediate Boys (four starters).—P, Mclnnes (Hataitai) and O. Vaughan' (Wellington), equal, 1; T. Major (Masterton), 3. Time, 63 2-ssec. Mclnnes went into an early lead, ahd at the end of two laps was about two yards ahead of the field. Vaughan came up strongly, however, and w&s if anything a shade ahead at the finish.

100 yds Intermediate Girls (three starters).—E. Nisbet, 1; M. McKechnie, 2. Time, 74sec. The winner had no trouble, and went ahead "from the start. ..

100 yds Junior Boys (four starters). —D. Mason, 1; D. Binnie, 2; E. Dennis, 3. Time, 71sec. The winner swam easily* throughout, and steadily drew away from the rest of the field, which was on even terms.

50yds Junior Girls (two starters).— M. Wright. 1. Time, 38 2-ssec. The winner went well, and was uhdistressed at the finish.

100 yds Intermediate Boys' Breaststroke.—l. Robertson swam unpaced, and completed the distance in the excellent time of 80 2-ssec. He looked as if he should be able to improve on this time by several seconds.

220 yds Intermediate Girls two starters).—E. Nisbet, I.' Time. 3min Msec. The winner was 15 yards ahead at the finish, and did not appear to exert herself.

220 yds Intermediate Boys four starters).—O. Vaughan (Wellington), 1; P. Mclnnes (Hataitai), 2; T, Major (Masterton), 3. Time, 2muv 57sec. Vaughan went ahead early, and Mclnnes, plainly tired after his previous swim, dropped back. He challenged strongly about 100 yards from the finish, when Vaughan slowed up, but the Wellington boy went ahead again from the last turn and won by about two yards'. Major was inches behind.

220 yds Junior Boys (four starters).— D. Mason, 1; E. Dennis. 2; D. Binnie, 3. Time, 3min 16sec. Mason gained steadily after taking the lead,at the start, and was not pressed.

• 100 yds Intermediate Girls' Backstrake (three starters).—E. Nisbet. 1; M. McKechnie, 2. Time, 95sec. This was a very close race, and inches separated the first two home.

100 yds Intermediate Boys' Backstroke.—B. Gerrard swam the distance unpaced in 81 seconds. He has a very powerful stroke, and should break 80 in competition.
