GROUNDS AND BATHS
MANY APPLICATIONS
THE NEW LEGISLATION
Many applications have been received by the Government for financial aid towards the purchase or development of 'sports grounds and for the erection or completion of swimming baths" in outlying districts of the Dominion. The Minister of Internal Affairs, (the Hon. W. E. Parry) stated today that a large percentage- of the applications had been made following on the passing of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act.
"For a fine bodily and healthy exercise and recreation," Mr. Parry said, "swimming is one of the best mediums the people of any district could employ, but there is a sad lack of facilities for safo swimming in a large number of our country districts. The many applications received for assistance emphasise this. Some of the districts have been, in the past, altogether forgotten in their sports and recreation amenities. It will be the duty of the council, to be set up under tho new legislation, to go into all applications when it is making its national survey." . The Minister, added that the appointment of the personnel of the council would be a matter to be considered as I early as practicable.
