CARS DELAYED
ROAD REPAIRS NECESSARY
(By Telegraph—i"ress Association.)
WESTPORT, January 9,
The many people returning from holidays to resume work on Monday will long remember the last stage of their journey, as heavy and • continuous rain through Friday night and early on Saturday morning caused slips, wash-outs, flooded roads, and other troubles. A big slip near Tiroroa, in the Buller Gorge, carried part of the road into the river and passengers had to cross over the slip to rejoin cars on the other side, thus resuming their journeys between Nelson and Westport, and Reefton and Westport. A hold-up occurred on the Westport-Greymouth coastal road near Addison's Flat, part of the road being heavily flooded. Cars got through late in the evening. One carrying firm had 240 in and out passengers for the day and was greatly relieved when all the cars had safely negotiated the flooded area, the fall of the water being almost as rapid as the rise. A wash-out occurred on the railway line near Birchfield, but was speedily repaired and traffic resumed. .Cars got through to Nelson and-from Nelson to Westport today, but after the service cars go through tomorrow morning there will ■be a temporary closure until Tuesday while the road is being repaired. Traffic continues between Westport and Greymouth via the coastal road.
