CROSS PURPOSES
HOURS TO BE LONGER
Several people are at cross purposes over bathing hours, and not at Karori baths alone. Starting at the top, the Mayor and City Councillors had their say at the last meeting of the council and were not pleased about the hours; swimming clubs have written and rewritten during the past few seasons; unattached swimmers have grumbled ineffectively and yesterday put up a joint demonstration (which was badly timed from the weather aspect, for it was not much of an evening for late bathing); and youngsters who waited to get in this morning had very definite views about it; but obviously there is a reasonable way round when the cross purposes are sorted out to make easy reading. ,
The chairman of the reserves committee, Councillor J. Burns, stated this morning that he had not been consulted as chairman of the responsible committee before replies were made through the Press to officials of the Karori Swimming Club.
The one concrete result that has been brought about by the discussions is that bathing hours are to be longer in the case of the Karori baths, the afternoon and evening sessions will be continued till 8 p.m. on ■ week days and till 5.30 p.m. on Sundays, but there still remain differences of opinion about club hours.
What the bathers want is not to know that at last they have baths and pavilions, but to be able to use them at hours when they are not at work.
The executive of the Ratepayers' Association has raised "another point in regard to the Oriental Bay bathing ■pavilion:, that the deck of the pavilion is closed in the evenings, and, having regard to the facts that this flat roof cost a good deal of money, the best return for which might be ready accessibility, and that elsewhere such facilities are not merely offered but even ■ advertised, the members express some surprise.
