TIMARU HARBOUR

EXTENSION PLANNED

Harbour improvements on an ambitious scale at Timaru were sanctioned by the passing of the Timaru Harbour Board Loan Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. The measure gives the board authority to raise a loan of £242,000, and details of the scheme adopted by the board for the extension of shipping facilities at the port were outlined by the Rev; C. L. Carr (Government, Timaru). The growth of Timaru's maritime trade, he said, had made it necessary to enlarge the harbour. Marine. superintendents and the shipping companies had approved of the scheme, which would enhance the utility of Timaru's shipping facilities and enable the port to cope more adequately with the volume of trade which it was required to handle from year to year. Berthage would be increased to 2250 feet, and would' make it possible for the largest vessels trading in New Zealand waters to operate at the port.

The schedule setting out the expenditure showed that £81,000 will be spent on rebuilding the north mola and £66,000 on dredging a new entrance channel and swinging basin. Two electric cargo cranes Eire to be purchased and- erected on the No. 1 wharf, the cost of this item being £19,000. Repairs to the eastern extension will absorb a further £10,000, and £58,000 will be spent on obtaining plant and defraying the cost of raising the loan.
