ROAD SAFETY
GOOD RESULTS SHOWN
MINISTER , GRATIFIED
"In connection with the figures relating to deaths from motor accidents which appear in the annual report of the Transport Department," said the Minister of Transport' (the Hon. R. Semple) in an interview today, "I wish to make'it clear that those relate to the year ended March 31, 19§7, which is the period covered by the report.
"The latest figures show that during the fourteen months that have elapsed since the new road safety policy commenced in September, 1936, there have been 235 deaths as compared with 265 ior the fourteen months preceding September, 1936. There has, therefore, been a reduction of thirty in the number of deaths over these periods, in spite of a substantial increase in the volume of road traffic during the period since the new road safety campaign bectcne effective.
"These facts," said Mr. Semplie, "are convincing" proof of the effectiveness of the road safety campaign. Most of the new proposals will take some time to become fully operative, but it is gratifying that good results have already been shown."
