ANNUAL STATEMENT PRESENTED

OVER £18,000,000 TO BE SPENT

Details of how the Public Works appropriations are to be allocated durin" the current year are contained in the annual Public Works Statement, which was tabled in the House of Representatives this afternoon by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. K. Semple). The proposed expenditure from loan moneys en Public WoTks amounts io £10,440,957, a D d in addition £7,834,957 will be ' expended from the General Purposes Account, making a total,expenditure of £18,275,914. The greatest item of expenditure• willi* on main highways. These will absorb £4,165,200, of which '' £1,906,000 will be loan money. A sum of £1,108,000 will be de- " voted to railway construction, and on roads other than main hign- . iayVit is intended to spend £966,000. The sum of £250,000 is to "\ be spent on public buildings, and £320,000 has been earmarked for aerodrome construction. , ~. • «n • «W» In a foreword to the statement the Minister says: It is the '" endeavour of the Department to carry out Public Works to a ' standard commensurate with their importance, and particularly is this so with works which have a substantial economic value; but. ■ : from the very fact that certain work will only reach their full value in the future, it is the policy of the department to maintain the same high standard with these works."
