AMALGAMATION ISSUE
PETONE COUNCIL'S SUGGESTIONS
The Petone.. .Borough Council con» sidered last evening the principles and pravisions of the proposed Local Government Amalgamation Schemes Bill and decided to support the decision reached by. the . council ; on March 1 when it was decided that the following suggestions should be made: —
(a) That provision. should be given for the taking of a; poll of ratepayers if the local body aflfected thinks necessary, which poll being found to be opposed to amalgamation should throw the onus on to the proponent of the scheme of amalgamation, (b) That the .Commission proposed to be set up should consist of a permanent chairman, who should be either a stipendiary Magistrate or a Judge of the Supreme Court, and two members, one of whom should be nominated by the proponents of the scheme,, and the other by the dissentients, or a majority of them, (c) That the only grounds on which the inquiry of the commission should proceed should be those already set out in the title to the Bill. (d). That the finding of the commission should be laid before Parliament, and given effect to by that body. .
