BROADCASTING BILL
DEBATE IN COUNCIL
The Broadcasting Amendment Bill received an excellent reception in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon, there being no opposition to the measure. However, councillors showed considerable interest in . broadcasting generally and the Bill will be debated further on Tuesday. The speeches made yesterday covered, in the main, the same field as the debate in the House of Representatives. After the Leader of the Council (the Hon. M. Fagan) had moved the second reading, the Hon. V. Ward (Wellington) spoke. Mr.' Ward said that he agreed that national and commercial broadcasting.should be. under separate | control, and discussed the principles lof the Bill. He asked who controlled [the two Controllers of Broadcasting,' but said that he did not question their salaries because he believed the reward offered to capable men in New Zealand was not great enough. After other Councillors had spoken the debate was adjourned.
