1940 EXHIBITION
PALMERSTON NORTH'S
SHARES
Palnierstcm' %rtii has Jaken ■•: 500 shares -'in :the^New: Zealand Centennial ExhiiittionCpmpaw^ Stating this fact today; iiie MayorScMr; -% C; A. Hislop) emphasised the fact; that local bodies had been given legislative authority to take* up share interests in the big show:that was to mark not only.the centenary of Wellington but the centenary of New Zealand. Mr. Hislop. said that the reception given him and Mr. C. P. Hainsworth, exhibition manageri at: Palmerstori North was most cordial, and he was sure that the meeting would result in definite interest being created in the Exhibition. It was true that nothing was offered in return for the capital invested in shares, continued the Mayor, but on the other, hand, he was convinced that most of the capital would be returned, and that there would be. something in the way of indirect benefit to: many, by reason of. the large, influx of people into New Zealand from overseas, and also by. the great number of people resident in the Dominion who would be induced to travel to Wellington to see an exhibition of a kind which--had not previously been seen staged in the country. If 3,500,000 people were' induced to visit the last Dunedin Exhibition, held in a city at the extreme end of the South Island, surely Wellington could anticipate an attendance of at least 5,000,000 for the Centennial Exhibition. To have such a large number of people concentrating in Wellington in a sixmonths' period must mean something to the trade of the city.: ; : ■"'■ There was thus ample reason why local bodies should go a little out of their .way to help, particularly those in the Wellington provincial district. The actual opening of the. Exhibition was now only two years away, and he looked with confidence to an appreciable quickening of- interest in the project during the coming year. .■■/.-;.
