CARD PARTIES

KILBIRNIE R.S.A

The social committee of the Kilbirnie auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers' Association entertained a large gathering of card enthusiasts at the weekly card evening held in the clubroom last night. Bridge and 500 were the games played and the successful players were Mrs. Cadwallader and Mr. H. Synnott for bridge, and Mrs. Salmond and Mr. J. Cameron for 500. The competitions were won by Mrs. J. Strange and Mr. A. F. Averi.

| The supper was provided by members of the ladies' committee and duringl the interval it was'announced by the secretary that a combined social would be held on Thursday night of this week. Cards for the ladies would be held as usual on Thursday afternoon, and on Armistice Night, Thursday, November 11, arrangements had been made to entertain the members of the Karori auxiliary. It was also announced that a challenge had been accepted from the Ngaio auxiliary to play for the "Whiz-bang" Cup on De-

cember sat Maidstone Park. This cup was presented'last cricket season by Mrs. J. MeClatchey for annual competition between the Ngaio and Kilbirnie auxiliaries. The Kilbirnie auxiliary was the first winner of the handsome trophy. / SOUTH AFRICAN WA$ VETERANS.

Another pleasant evening was spent at the South African War Veterans' clubrooms at Lambton Quay recently when the social committee entertained the visitors at a card party. Bridge, 500, and euchre were played and the winners were Mrs. R. V. A. Knox and Mr. D, Wright' for {bridge, Mrs. E. Harris and Mrs. L. Caton for 500, and Mrs. C. Carberry and Mr. T. Moses for euchre. A special prize.presented by' Mrs: Cr Carberry was won by Mrs. Grinlinton. During the serving of supper the president, Captain J. J. Clark, thanked the visitors for their attendance and enthusiastic support, and said that it was with great pleasure he was able to announce that the treasurer, Mr. B. C. Cull, had so far recovered from his serious illness that he had been discharged from hospital that day. He hoped that the time, was not far distant when Mr. Cull would be-able to resume his normal activities.
