EMPIRE GAMES

CYCLISTS SELECTED

THREE MEN CHOSEN

In selecting F, J. Grose (Canterbury), and J. Brown and R; S. Triner (Auckland) to represent the Dominion :in the 100 kilometres massed-start road cycling event at the Empire Games, to be held in Sydney in February, the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association's selectors, Messrs. P. N. Robinson (North Island) and R. Hill (South Island) have sprung no surprises. They have kept closely to form. Grose, without doubt, is the best ail-round cyclist produced in New Zealand, at least since the war. Though now a veteran so far as years of competition are concerned (he has been riding in important competition forover ten years) his form in the New Zealand 100 kilometres road trial held in Canterbury recently indicated that as a road cyclist he is as good as ever. He has made many notable performances in the Palmerston North to Wellington event, and is the pre^ sent holder of the amateur record. He won the South Island road championship in Dunadin this season, and also the Canterbury flfty^mile championship. Grose has already had one trip abroad, in 1934, when he represented the Dominion at the Empire Games in London. ■ '..-

Brown is the present Auckland 100 miles champion, andgust over a week ago made fastest time in the Palmerston North to Wellington road race, thereby acquiring the North Island title. His time, 4hr 38min 17 2-ssec, was only 7?sec outside Grose's record. He was also third to Grose and Triner in the recent 100 kilometres trial. Triner'has-made several fine performances in the last two seasons. He made fastest time in the 1936 Palmerstori North to Wellington event, and this year was second to Brown in the Auckland 100' miles championship, and second also to E. L. G. Hughes, of Auckland, in the New Zealand championship.sheld in conjunction with the "Round-the-Gorges" race in Christchurch. He was second, too, to Grose, in the 100 kilometres trial. Triner is also a good track performer and finished fourth, in the ;; 'time, trial at the last New Zealand championships.
