DEAR RING PEOPLE:
The red flames that burn in the grate tonight are really the tangled locks of the chimney witches for, have you remembered, my elves, that this is Hallowe'en in the Ring. Our guests are witches, goblins, ghosties—all the eerie-skeerie ones, who, folk once believed, came back to visit their earthly haunts once every year on the last night of October. It is not so long since Hallowe'en bonfires' burned throughout Scotland and Wales, for it was an old belief that the flames fright: ened away evil spirits. Perhaps the Welsh and Scottish children, still pretend to believe in Hallowe'en for bonfire parties cdn be great fun and Hallowe'en games, "apple-bobbing" "chestnut popping" and storytelling, are enjoyed by boys and girls and grownups, too. Be most polite to the witches tonight, pixie people. Enquire after their newest recipes for spells and potions and be very careful not to mention aeroplanes, for witches still remain faithful to broomsticks. If you are lucky enough to go to a Hallowe'en party this weekend, do tell the Ring about it. Here is a Hallowe'en verse for you:' The strangest things this night are seen, For now'tis time for Hallowe'en The owl, with glowing eyes of green, Hoots, "Hallowe'en, 'tis Hallowe'en." Elves and goblins coloured bright, In fitting raiment come this night, Bright-eyed gnomes and witches tall, - 1 Bid a welcome to you all. Fun and frolic, laughter light, Belong to mortals on this night While ghosts and ghoulies, spirits lean Keep their'tryst on Hallowe'en. My love to you all. FAIRIEI. P.S.—Please post stories, verses, and sketches for Animal Page this week. —"Letterbox Elf."
