HIKERS' HEELS

When woollen stockings or tennis socks are worn with strong shoes for 'Walking they will last longer if the heels are reinforced with Careful darning. The inside of the heel should be strengthened with running stitches in fine wool that only just catch the surface. The end loops should be cut, so that after the stockings have been worn and washed the running threads may easily be pulled out before a fresh darn is worked. For the right side soft darning silk is best. The shade should be a little darker than the stockings, and the running stitches should be as inconspicuous as possible. The silk keeps the surface strong and neat where the top of the shoe heel is apt to rub soft wool into untidy wisps.
