"GOLDILOCKS"

OPERETTA PRESENTED

Perhaps the first story told by mothers to their children is that of l "The Three Bears," which has been 'loved by countless numbers as it dates back for a great many years. "Goldilocks," the little heroine who visits the cottage of the bears, sits in their chairs, tastes their porridge, and finally goes to sleep on tho "Little Bear's" bed, is a figure in the life of most children. Therefore an operetta written round the charming old story is one which would specially appeal, and naturaally made a great success when presented by Miss Ruby Mac Donald at the Opera House on Wednesday night. The idea that "Goldilocks" sang charmingly was new, but Miss Marie Irwin who took the part showed that she had a good voice, and her work was well done. It was a thrill to see the cottage of the "Three Bears" after having only heard of it, and added to this was the charm of the rest of the I scenery—tall, mysterious-looking pines, artistic groups of lilies, and in all good woodland scenery. Then the pretty "brownies" and brilliant "butterflies" all added to, the ensemble, culminating in the beauty of the "Fairy Queen." It was a very excellent "show" for children, and as such should receive special appreciation in these days when there is a real lack of suitable and artistic entertainment for the young. Appreciated by the older musical folk were the violin solos given by Miss Mac Donald with orchestral accompaniment. The children's ages ranged from thirteen to five years, and taking this into consideration it realised that a very excellent performance was given. Those who took part were Lois Giles, Joy Graham, Ngaire Broughton, Fluffy Knowles, Marie Knowles, Pamela Savage, Lexie Barton, Colleen Giles, Colleen Dreyer, Maria Garland, Elaine Garland, Shirley Dobbs, Marie Irwin, Margaret Russell, Dawn Armstrong, and Heather Davidson. / ■ .
