THEFT FROM CAR

Pleading not guilty to the theft last night of 7s in money, George William John Dawes, able seaman, aged 21, appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. Evidence was given to the effect that the theft was made from a pair of trousers left in a car parked in a city street. The owner of the car returned and found the accused seated in the front seat, apparently in a drunken condition. When the money was missed and the accused had no explanation, he was handed over to the police. The accused gave evidence that he was waiting for a friend. He denied the Ihcft, but could not account for money found in his possession. The accused was convicted and fined 20s and costs. He was ordered to refund the money, in default seven days' imprisonment.
